Just 140 miles north of Portland, San Antonio seems like a different world. 2 things you go to San Antonio for: Riverwalk and the Alamo. Blessed by sunny warmish (peaking at 70F) weather we took a tour of the Alamo and the grounds around it. After several mundane uses over the years, and serious neglect, the mission has been repaired substantially to preserve structural integrity. Now revered, decorum is requested (gentlemen are asked to remove hats) and the experience is “eyes only” - no pictures are allowed inside.
We also toured the oldest Catholic Church in town where the
remains of many Alamo heroes (Crockett, Bowie,
Travis and others) are interred.
All in all, pretty somber stuff so we headed for the river
for more upbeat experiences.
Out in the middle of south Texas some inspired San Antonians decided to
dam up a small river and created this:
Descending from the street we strolled (you can take a boat
tour if you want) beside the river which is lined with shops and eateries
(heavily weighted in Mexican which delighted us both). We stopped for lunch at
Rita’s and Norene enjoyed a spontaneous serenade by the well tipped in-house
mariachi band. Totally unnatural, and a little crowded but an experience not to
miss if you come near this city.
At the western end of Riverwalk we hit the streets and
walked to the old Market – mostly Mexican goods and open air kitchen foods –
smelled delicious but we were stuffed.
We ended our walk at the prettiest mall entry I’ve ever seen
(wait – this is the only pretty mall
entry I have seen).
After a DQ reward I was released to go back to the car while
Norene checked out the Macey’s.
