31 March 2014 We
did some learning today
For example I now know that the Garden District was named
because the “Americans” who moved into the city built homes with front lawns
and gardens - unlike the Spanish and French who built homes closer to the
street and had more private rear yards.
We took a guided walking tour with Nancy of Hop On Hop Off
Tours.

Those purple marks are from post Katrina searches. The owners have decided to retain them as a historical footnote. |
This a lift for getting up into a carriage. Last one in the District according to Nancy |
The French Consulate |
Our Mother Of Perpetual Help. Nicholas Cage used to own this home. Lost it in a bankruptcy settlement. |
Gazebo in Our Mother Of Perpetual Help. |
The Corn Fence. Installed because one of the original owners missed her Iowa cornfields. They used to plant corn here in the front garden. |
According to our guide the double staircase divided the men and women so the boys wouldn't see the girls' ankles when they used the stairs. |
We had lunch here. Juan's is on Magazine Street - borders one side of the District (near Jackson). Fresh and innovative food in a lively atmosphere. You should go if you come here. |
We're on St. Charles - part of the Mardis Gras route. Years of necklaces on that roof. |
And in the trees |
We did a drive-by of Mardis Gras World where they prepare and store the floats. |
Yet another tourist shot of Jackson Square. |
We love The Big Easy for being so different and eclectic. We will be back.
