We drove about 1½ hours north of Lake
Havasu City to Oatman
AZ – once a thriving mining town
and now a classic tourist attraction on Route 66. This is a poorly surfaced,
curvaceous, slow and spectacular road that seems to go around every cactus.
Oatman’s claim to fame is its wild donkeys roaming loose in the streets. You
may feel that your city is also filled with donkeys but at least the burros in
Oatman don’t drive.
Last time I wrote I promised baby donkey pictures if you
made it all the way through including the video. If so please proceed to the
next pictures. If you got here by accident without viewing the previous post
(not likely but it could happen) you
are cheating – nice work! You too can proceed.
Another not to be missed highlight in Oatman is the
restaurant/bar in the Oatman Hotel.
There is money plastered all over the walls. It has become a
tradition to sign a (usually) one dollar bill and staple it to one of the walls
(or even the ceiling). Turns out green is a great colour for your southwest
décor:
This last photo is for all who know my propensity to collect
t-shirts at places we’ve been. Did not get a donkey shirt – don’t want to make
anyone think they have double vision.
