Arizona gives us the Thumb

4 Mar 2013

Butte that is. Heading east out of Bullhead City you climb on I-86 until to you come to a BLM signed turnoff about 10 miles out. I believe this is why they call it Thumb Butte:

I might have been guilty of suggesting this formation looked more like a finger than a thumb. This may explain why the Arizona Tourism folks haven’t called me in to consult.

Of course this called for a hike so we parked Smiley soon after leaving the highway and set out for the Thumb. As usual, everything in the desert is further than you think.

It's just around the corner - no really!

On the way we saw this lone cholla bush hosting a bid’s nest – no birds or eggs though.

Plus who knew we would find rocks in some Arizona foothills? Or why we took this picture? If you see something special about these please write ‘cause I can’t remember why I took this picture:

From a distance you could see that there was a sideroad that lead right to the bottom of the Butte. Purpose? We thought probably because this was (is?) a mine site. We didn’t go farther than the beginning of the sideroad because we were already out an hour and had just enough water left for the return walk. Spied a few openings that looked man made and took these zoomers:

Next time we’re going to drive to the Butte first so we can check it out. This is a weird and wonderful place if you are addicted to hiking.
