Damming evidence on the Colorado

2 Mar 2013

Davis Dam slows the Colorado just north of Laughlin Nevada and Bullhead City Arizona. On the upriver side of the Davis Dam lies Lake Mohave. Hydro generation is shared by the bordering states Arizona and Nevada. The dam itself rises above the spillway and generating station in these photos:

For a couple of miles south of the dam the Nevada side of the river has been developed into a park with several trails, rest spots, shelters, and even a grassy area near the dam.

The Arizona side has been set aside as an rv park with both fully served sites further back and unserviced sites right on the water. This is a smokin’ great spot to camp for a while and watch the Colorado race past. Sorry for the lousy photo:

If you (like us) live in a northern locale with green everywhere you might be thinking that the Nevada side is still under construction. Not so – maybe some coloured rock and a few plants coming up to complete the picture but that’s about it. Like living on a different planet. And a nice warm one.
